The thirtieth anniversary of the Hama massacre, in which 20,000 perished, reminds us that the Ba'athist dictatorship and the al-Assad dynasty, which has ruled Syria since 1971, is no novice when it comes to the slaughter of its own people. Famed for their intransigence, the son Bashar could say, like the father, Hafiz; "I am in blood stepped in so far that should I wade no more, returning were as tedious as go o'er."
